Choose storage that protects your products and makes orders easier to hand over—not a space that leaves you chasing access, dealing with damaged stock or arranging every delivery from scratch. Use this checklist before you sign.

What is this stock-storage checklist for?
A quick walk-through helps you match the building to what you sell, spot risks before they reach your stock and set up a clear routine for receiving and dispatching orders. Before you view, write down what you store, how much space it takes, how it needs to be protected and how often you receive or send stock.
Match the space to the products you sell
- Check the usable storage area against your stock volume, shelving and packing needs—not just the advertised floor area.
- Look for roof or wall damp, standing water, water marks and blocked drains. Ask how leaks and other faults are reported and handled.
- Test the lights, power points and water supply. Ask what is included, how access is arranged and who handles maintenance.
- Check whether the ventilation suits your products and how the space handles heat and stale air.
- Look for gaps, droppings or other signs of pest entry. Ask what pest controls are in place and who responds if there is a problem.
- If your products need special protection, write down those requirements and check that the space can meet them before you commit.
Can vehicles reach the loading area?
Walk the full approach from the road to the loading point. Check the gate, turning space, room to wait and the area where stock is loaded or unloaded. Ask about receiving hours, after-hours access and any vehicle or loading restrictions. A convenient-looking entrance is not enough if the full handover is difficult.
Are the exits, lighting and security ready for stock?
- Find the fire exits. Check that they are clearly marked, easy to reach and not blocked by stock or equipment.
- Look at the exit routes and ask how emergency information is shared with people using the space.
- Check lighting around entrances, storage areas and loading points.
- Ask what monitoring and security procedures are in place, who can access the space and how access is recorded.
- Confirm who is responsible for maintaining safety equipment and reporting a problem.
How do you prevent orders getting lost in the handover?
Agree on a simple routine before the first delivery arrives. Decide who can receive stock and when, how incoming quantities and visible damage will be recorded, who can access the space and how each dispatch is logged. Keep those details together so you can find an order’s status quickly when a customer asks.
- Name the person responsible for receiving each delivery.
- Record incoming quantities and note visible damage at handover.
- Set clear access rules for staff and anyone collecting orders.
- Log each dispatch so your team can check what has left and when.
- Photograph the empty space and any existing damage before moving stock in, then keep the records and agreed handover details together.
Easy-to-miss checks before you sign
- Ask about limits on the types of goods you can store.
- Confirm receiving hours, after-hours access and the process for arranging a handover.
- Clarify who handles power, water, security, maintenance and pest issues.
- Check the route stock will take from storage to the loading point, and make sure it stays clear.
