Know whether a delivery message is real before you pay, travel to collect or hand over a code. A message alone is not proof: match it to a parcel you’re expecting, then verify the details through a contact route you already trust.

The common belief: A delivery message means your parcel is waiting

Not necessarily. Anyone can send a message claiming there’s a parcel, a collection point or a fee to pay. Whether it mentions the CBD, Eastleigh, Githurai or Kasarani, verify the details independently before acting.

What should you check before paying or travelling to collect?

Check the order or tracking details with the retailer, sender or courier using a contact channel you already trust—not just a link or phone number in the message. Match the parcel reference, handover location, any amount due and the authorised contact. If a detail is unexpected or doesn’t match, pause and verify before you go or pay.

Why do fake delivery messages feel convincing?

They can sound urgent and use familiar delivery language, so it’s easy to act before checking. A request to log in, share personal details or send money through a number supplied only in the message is a reason to stop and verify—not a reason to hurry.

What to do instead: protect your payment details and delivery code

  1. Contact the sender or courier through a number or channel you already know, and confirm the parcel reference, location, authorised contact and any amount due.
  2. If a payment is requested, confirm the amount and approved digital payment method through that trusted contact before paying. Don’t send money to details supplied only in an unexpected message.
  3. Keep any delivery code private until you’ve verified the parcel and are at the agreed handover. Never share your M-Pesa PIN, account password or login OTP with a caller or courier.
  4. If you clicked a suspicious link, shared credentials or paid, stop responding. Contact the relevant service provider through its official channel and keep the message and transaction details in case you need to report what happened.
A delivery handover code and your account credentials are not the same thing. Keep your PIN, password and login OTP private—always.
