What is this delivery vehicle checklist for?

A few focused questions can help you avoid last-minute confusion, set a repeatable handover and keep customers better informed. Treat each vehicle and delivery task on its own: a motorcycle and a van may have different requirements.

What should you check about the vehicle and driver?

  • Record the vehicle registration details, vehicle type and intended business use.
  • Ask the relevant authority which driver licence class, vehicle inspection or other requirements apply to that vehicle and use.
  • Check that the driver is authorised and prepared to operate that vehicle for the planned work.
  • Before loading, check the vehicle’s condition and capacity, and make sure the parcel can be secured without obstructing the driver or creating an unsafe load.

Is your vehicle cover valid for carrying goods for business?

Ask your insurer or broker—in writing—whether the policy covers carrying customer orders for business. Check the policy schedule and exclusions, and confirm the permitted drivers and the kinds of goods involved. Don’t assume that having an insurance certificate answers whether your actual delivery work is covered.

What training should you ask about before carrying goods?

  • Ask a suitable driving school or trainer about safe load handling and vehicle checks for the vehicle type.
  • For unusual or specialist items, pause before dispatch and ask the relevant authority, insurer or broker about any specific training, handling, vehicle or cover conditions.
  • Don’t assume that ordinary parcel-handling experience settles requirements for a specialist item.

Who should you ask about vehicle and delivery requirements?

  • Ask NTSA about the licensing, inspection and driver-class questions for the specific vehicle and use.
  • Ask your insurer or broker about business use, permitted drivers, the goods being carried and policy exclusions.
  • Ask a driving school or trainer about practical vehicle checks, safe loading and handling.

What delivery handover details are easy to miss?

Make the handover repeatable: match the parcel to its destination, confirm the rider or driver has accepted it, record who took responsibility and agree how delivery updates or exceptions will be reported. A consistent routine gives your team a clearer way to answer customers asking where an order is.
