Pack several items with less risk of shifting and damage

Keep your order organised and better protected in transit: wrap items individually, separate anything that could collide, and shake-test the closed box before sealing it. You’ll spot movement while it’s still easy to fix.

What do you need to pack several items in one box?

  • A sturdy box with room for the contents and cushioning.
  • Protective material to wrap items and fill gaps.
  • Dividers or smaller inner boxes to keep items apart.
  • Strong packing tape to close and reinforce the box.

How should you separate items in one box?

Sort your items by fragility, weight and shape before packing. Wrap anything that could scratch, break or damage another item. Use dividers or inner boxes when wrapping alone won’t keep items apart. Keep heavy items from pressing against fragile ones, and cushion hollow fragile items from the inside too.

How to pack multiple items in one box: 5 steps

  1. Choose a sturdy box suited to the size, weight and shape of its contents. Leave room for cushioning.
  2. Wrap items individually if they could scratch, break or damage one another. Add dividers or inner boxes where needed.
  3. Place the heaviest, sturdiest items low in the box. Arrange lighter or fragile items so they do not bear the weight of heavier ones.
  4. Cushion around and between the contents. Fill gaps so items cannot slide, but don’t pack so tightly that the box bulges.
  5. Close the box and give it a gentle shake. If anything shifts, reopen it and add cushioning or a divider before sealing.

How do you shake-test a box before sealing it?

With the box closed, shake it gently and listen and feel for movement. If items knock together or slide, reopen the box and improve the cushioning or separation. Before sealing, check that the box closes flat and has no exposed or awkward protrusions.

When does an item need specialist packing?

Give sharp, fragile, crushable, unusually shaped or very heavy items extra attention. Use a sturdy box and secure bracing so the contents cannot shift. If an item cannot be contained and braced securely, rethink the packaging before handover—loose wrapping won’t solve a shape or stacking problem.

What are common mistakes when packing multiple items?

  • Placing fragile items beside heavy or hard items without a divider.
  • Leaving gaps where contents can slide and collide.
  • Overfilling the box until it bulges or will not close flat.
  • Sealing the box without checking for movement.

Build a repeatable packing checklist for every order

Make dispatch easier to repeat: count the items, protect them individually, separate and brace them, shake-test the box, check the closure, then apply the label. A consistent packing routine helps you prepare customer orders as your business grows.
