What this furniture delivery checklist helps you avoid

A sofa that cannot clear the doorway, a delivery that stops outside the building, or damage you cannot clearly record can turn an exciting order into a stressful handover. Whether you are furnishing a flat in Kilimani or a home in Ruaka, check the details with the furniture seller before paying.

What should you measure before ordering furniture online?

  • Measure the furniture and each part that must pass through the route, including its packaging if relevant.
  • Measure the doorway, corridors, lift doors and stairways—not just the front entrance.
  • Check tight turns, stair landings and lift interiors. A piece can fit through a doorway and still fail at the next turn.
  • Share measurements with the seller if any part looks close, and ask them to confirm the item’s dimensions.

Curbside, gate or in-room: where does delivery end?

“Delivery” can mean different things. Ask the seller to state in writing whether the handover is at the curb, gate, building entrance or inside the room. Confirm separately whether carrying upstairs, extra loaders, assembly, installation or packaging removal are included or need another arrangement.

Do you need loaders to carry furniture upstairs?

Do not assume the delivery team will carry a bulky item to your floor. Confirm who is responsible for lifting, how many helpers are needed and whether stairs or lift access change the arrangement. If you live in a flat in Lavington or Syokimau, check with the caretaker or estate security about lift bookings, gate passes, loading areas and permitted delivery hours.

Easy-to-miss checks before you pay—and at handover

  • Ask whether the building needs advance notice, an access permit or a security booking.
  • Clear the route and make sure an authorised person can receive the furniture.
  • Inspect the packaging and item at handover. Photograph visible damage before the delivery team leaves.
  • Record visible damage on the delivery note before signing, then contact the seller promptly. Keep your order confirmation and delivery paperwork.
  • Ask the seller what to do if the item is damaged or does not match the order; keep the response with your purchase records.
