Get your device ready to send without a last-minute battery surprise: identify how the battery is packed, disclose its condition and ask the right questions before booking.

Why does the battery setup matter?
A battery installed in a device, packed alongside it or sent by itself can be treated differently. Requirements can depend on the battery type, its capacity, its condition and whether the planned transport includes air. Don’t assume that approval for a device with its battery also covers a separate power bank or spare.
- Battery contained in equipment: for example, the battery installed in a phone or laptop.
- Battery packed with equipment: a separate battery included alongside the device.
- Battery shipped by itself: for example, a spare battery or power bank sent without the device.
What should you ask the courier before booking?
- Does the planned route use air transport?
- Do you accept this exact battery type and configuration for this shipment?
- What packaging, marking or paperwork do you require?
- Does a trained dangerous-goods specialist need to assess the parcel before booking?
What battery details should you have ready?
Before you contact the courier, check the battery or device label and be ready to share:
- The device and battery type.
- The capacity details shown on the label, including watt-hours if listed.
- Whether the battery is installed, packed with the device or being sent on its own.
- Whether it is new or used, and whether it is damaged, swollen, recalled or intended for recycling.
Example: sending a laptop with a spare power bank
Tell the courier the laptop has a battery installed and that the power bank is a separate item in the parcel. Share the label details for both, then ask whether each configuration is accepted and what packing and declaration instructions apply. Don’t treat permission for the laptop as permission for the power bank.
What if the battery is used or damaged?
Disclose a used battery and describe its condition. A swollen, leaking, punctured, unusually hot or otherwise damaged battery is a stop-and-escalate issue—not a packing problem to solve with extra padding.
How do you get the parcel ready to hand over?
- List every battery in the parcel and give its configuration and condition.
- Ask about transport mode, acceptance, packing, marking and paperwork requirements.
- Follow the courier’s confirmed instructions and disclose every battery at handover.
- Don’t rely on a generic battery label or another courier’s rules as proof that your shipment is acceptable.
