What’s the difference between vehicle space and payload?

Cargo space is the room available for your parcel; payload is the weight the vehicle can carry. One does not tell you the other. A vehicle may have room for a large item but still need to meet its weight and loading requirements. Share both your parcel’s packed dimensions and its actual weight.

Pick A: Your parcel is compact and easy to handle

If your packed item has a regular shape and is straightforward to carry, measure it after packing and share its length, width, height and weight. Include a photo or describe its shape so the courier can understand what those measurements mean in practice.

Pick B: It’s bulky, heavy, fragile or awkward

Flag it before handover if the item is unusually heavy, long, fragile or difficult to grip. Explain whether it can bear weight and whether it needs a particular orientation. Ask how loading and unloading will be handled, and arrange extra help if you need it—don’t assume lifting or carrying assistance is included.

How should you measure a large parcel so it fits?

  • Measure the item after it is packed, at its longest, widest and tallest points.
  • Include anything that sticks out, such as handles, legs or corners.
  • Check the whole route: pickup and delivery doors, corridors, stairs or lift, turns, and the vehicle’s loading opening.
  • Tell the courier the packed dimensions, actual weight and shape. Ask whether the item needs a particular orientation.
Measuring only the item is not enough. Check the narrowest doorway and tightest turn on the full access path, too.

How do you stack and protect items during loading?

Don’t assume a parcel is safe to stack. Make clear which side must stay up and whether the item can take weight. Keep fragile items from being placed beneath heavier ones, pack the parcel to protect it, and check that it is stable and secured against movement before handover.

What should you confirm before the courier arrives?

Share the parcel’s packed dimensions, actual weight and any handling needs in advance. Confirm the collection point and who will bring the item to the handover point. Clear details help you compare the options without guessing from a vehicle’s general description.
