What should a courier tell you when you hand over a parcel?
Before acceptance, you should be able to identify the service you’re booking, the terms that apply, how the charge is worked out, and what to do if the parcel is lost or damaged. Ask the courier directly, then check the receipt or consignment reference matches what you agreed.
Do the same conditions apply to every courier service?
No single checklist replaces the terms for the service you actually choose. General packing advice can help you prepare, but it does not tell you what a particular operator’s conditions say. Ask which service applies—such as Express or Same-Day—and request the relevant terms before handing over your parcel.

What questions should you ask before the parcel is accepted?
- Which service am I booking, and which terms apply to it?
- Are these contents accepted, and do they need special handling? Describe the contents accurately.
- How is the charge calculated? Ask whether parcel size, weight, destination or parcel dimensions affect it.
- What compensation or insurance, if any, applies if the parcel is lost or damaged? Ask about conditions and exclusions.
- What happens if delivery cannot be completed?
- Who is accepting the parcel, and can I have a receipt or consignment reference?
How can you prepare your parcel before handover?
Pack the contents securely, cushion fragile items, and seal the parcel well. Use a clear, complete address and make sure the label is easy to read. If the item is valuable, keep proof of its value. Photograph the parcel and label before handover so you have a record of its condition and the address.
Example: handing over a fragile item
If you’re sending a fragile item, say so and ask whether it can be accepted and whether any special handling conditions apply. Cushion it inside the package, then check that the chosen service and parcel details are shown correctly on your receipt or reference.
What if the courier cannot explain the terms?
Pause before handing over the parcel. Ask for the conditions that apply to the service, especially the rules for compensation, exclusions and failed delivery. Clear terms help you decide whether that option fits your item and your needs.
