Get clear on your parcel’s next step without guessing from a tracking label. “In transit” can cover different stages, “out for delivery” is not the same as ready for collection, and a quiet tracking page does not automatically mean your parcel has stopped moving.

What does “in transit” mean?
“In transit” generally means the parcel is moving through the delivery process, but the label alone may not tell you its precise location or next stop. Depending on the courier’s tracking system, it can describe movement between facilities or a parcel waiting for its next recorded scan. Check the full event history and the courier’s own status explanations rather than reading a location or arrival time into the short label.
Out for delivery vs ready for collection: what’s the difference?
“Out for delivery” commonly means the parcel has been assigned to a delivery run. “Ready for collection” or “available for pickup” commonly means it is waiting at a collection location instead. Status labels vary, so check the courier’s details before changing your plans.
If collection is indicated, confirm the exact location and any collection requirements with the courier before you travel. Don’t assume the pickup point, opening hours or ID rules.
Why are tracking updates late or out of order?
Tracking reflects reported events, not always a live view of the parcel. Scans may not happen at every step, and information can take time to appear. Repeated “in transit” entries can also describe further scans as a parcel moves through the network.
When events look out of order, compare the event dates and times—not only the order in which they appeared on the page. If the entries seem to contradict each other, ask the courier to clarify before you change delivery plans.
What should you do when a parcel status hasn’t changed?
Start with the basics: recheck the tracking ID and the date and time of the latest event. If the status is still unclear, contact the sender or courier with the ID and ask:
- What was the last confirmed scan?
- Does the recipient need to take any action?
- If collection is indicated, where exactly is the parcel and what is required to collect it?
How can you make your parcel easier to track and deliver?
Before sending, make the recipient’s name and telephone number easy to verify. Add specific estate or building details, plus the floor, room or other directions needed to identify the delivery point. Keep your tracking receipt or ID handy so you can check events and answer follow-up questions.
