Ship the order whole or split it?

One location, one parcel: the tidy default

Ship whole when one location has verified, pickable stock for every order line and fulfilling it there will not create a meaningful customer or dispatch delay. One parcel is simpler to pick, hand over and explain—and customers avoid the surprise of separate arrivals.

Split locations: use when it helps the customer

Split only when it gets available items to the customer sooner or a single-location shipment is not workable. Before you do, weigh the extra parcel, handling and customer updates against the benefit. Record which items go in each parcel, then tell the customer clearly whether to expect one parcel or more.

Quick rule: verified stock for every line at one location, with no meaningful delay? Ship whole. Otherwise, split only when the customer benefit outweighs the added handling and communication.

How do you check whether a stock reservation is real?

A reserved quantity is not automatically stock you can pick—or a phantom hold. Trace it before changing your available stock:

  1. Match the reserved quantity to its underlying order, draft order, transfer or other hold.
  2. Check the record’s current status and confirm whether payment has been recorded where relevant.
  3. Verify the item and quantity physically on the shelf or in the bin.
  4. Release stock only after you confirm the reservation is stale; cancel or correct the record that created it.

What handover routine keeps orders moving?

Give the picker the order and location list. Verify every item and quantity against the order, flag short picks before packing, and record what goes into each parcel. Then update the fulfillment status and send one clear customer message explaining whether the order is coming in one parcel or more. A repeatable handover cuts the back-and-forth when orders build up.

When should you approve a substitution?

Never let a replacement slip into the parcel by assumption. Put the order on hold and get approval for the exact proposed item. Record the replacement, any price difference and the customer’s approval against the order before sealing the box. If approval is not received, decide whether to wait, remove the item or cancel that line.
