Solar panels, inverters and batteries: parcel or freight?

Pick A: Check parcel handling if the packed shipment is manageable

A parcel option may be worth checking when the equipment is packed into manageable packages and the shipment fits the applicable size, weight and battery acceptance conditions. Have the packed dimensions and weight ready, and check the Send page for the options that apply. Don’t assume an inverter or battery can travel as an ordinary parcel.

Pick B: Treat it as a freight-style load if it is heavy, oversized or palletized

A pallet, a non-stackable load, equipment that needs special loading, or a shipment too large or heavy for parcel limits points toward freight-style handling. Before booking, ask about applicable weight and dimension limits, palletized loads, stacking and loading equipment. Make the decision using the complete packed shipment—not the product label alone.

How do you protect solar panels from damage in transit?

Assess the glass panels separately from the heavy equipment. Use suitable rigid protective packaging, protect the edges and cushion the panels so they cannot shift. Keep pressure off the glass, and make clear if the load must not be stacked. At delivery, inspect the packaging and panels promptly; note visible damage and record it with the driver.

What battery details should you give the carrier?

Share the battery chemistry, make and model, and whether it is standalone, packed with equipment or installed in equipment. Battery classification and shipment requirements can depend on those details; packaging, markings, labels or paperwork may apply. Check the applicable conditions before handing it over. If a battery is damaged, seek carrier guidance before booking.

What should you have ready before booking?

  • Packed shipment dimensions and total weight.
  • Number of packages and pallet details, if applicable.
  • Whether the load is fragile, non-stackable or needs special loading equipment.
  • Battery chemistry, make and model, and how it is packed or installed.
