Make the right call on your old device: sell it honestly if it can still be used or repaired, and keep a damaged battery out of the parcel. A few checks can help you protect the buyer, your data and your device.
If your device is in safe, usable condition, start planning your delivery and see which options and prices apply to your parcel.
Can you sell a second-hand device—or is it e-waste?
Sell it as second-hand only if it can still be used or repaired, and describe its real condition. If it is unusable or not worth repairing, look for an appropriate e-waste collection or recycling option instead of listing it as working.
What should you check before selling a used phone or device?
- Test the functions a buyer will rely on, such as the screen, buttons, charging and calls.
- Write down what works, what does not, known faults and any repairs. Be direct in your listing and when handing it over.
- Remove your personal data and sign out of accounts. Remove account locks so the next owner can set up the device.
- For a phone, consider checking its IMEI before sale.
How do you send a working device safely?
Before booking, ask whether the courier accepts that device with its battery installed, whether it needs particular packaging or a declaration, and what handover proof you will receive. Do not assume every working device is automatically acceptable.
- Use a sturdy box and cushion the device on every side.
- Pack it so it cannot shift around in the box.
- Keep accessories from rubbing against or pressing on the device.
- Describe the contents accurately when arranging delivery.
For example: what if the phone works but has a cracked screen?
If the phone still works and can be repaired, you can consider selling it—but tell the buyer about the crack and any other faults. Protect the screen in the parcel and check battery and packaging requirements with the courier before booking.
Never post a swollen or damaged battery
Do not send a battery—or a device containing one—if it is swollen, unusually hot, leaking or visibly damaged. Stop using or charging it. Do not puncture it, dismantle it or put it in ordinary rubbish. Ask a local authority, manufacturer or specialist e-waste handler how to manage it safely.
