What is this stock-move checklist for?
A promotion can sell out in one branch while usable stock sits elsewhere. A last-minute rush may not solve a wider shortage, and a display unit mixed into available stock can lead to a disappointing order. Check the numbers and the purpose of each item before choosing your next move.
Before launch: count stock by product and location
- Count sellable stock at each location, using the same product names or codes on your count, pick list and dispatch record.
- Record reserved customer orders and incoming stock separately so they are not mistaken for available goods.
- Distinguish product variations—such as size, flavour, colour or packaging—so the team picks the intended item.
- Mark samples, display stands and demonstration units as not for sale. Store them apart from sellable stock and keep them out of available-stock counts and pick lists unless approved for sale.
Redistribute or rush replenishment: which is the smarter fix?
Redistribute when another location has usable excess stock and the transfer can arrive within the promotion’s remaining selling window. Consider speeding up replenishment when the wider network is short. Compare the expected arrival date and cost with the time left in the promotion before deciding.
How do you keep orders moving and customers informed?
- Confirm the item and quantity against the order.
- Separate and label the parcel so it is easy to identify at handover.
- Record who released it and when, and note any short count or damaged pack.
- Share the dispatch or tracking update with the customer so they know the order has moved.
A written handover routine helps your team avoid arranging every delivery from scratch—and gives you a clear record to check when an order needs attention.
Easy-to-miss stock checks after the promotion
- Reconcile what sold and what remains at each location.
- Account for stock used for displays, samples or demonstrations.
- Use the final count to inform your next launch or seasonal stock move.
