Compare the whole journey—not just the headline quote
Keep customer orders moving and protect your delivery budget: compare what each quote covers from pickup to final handover, not just the rail or road line-haul. A cheap rail line can still need a truck at each end, while a road quote can also leave important charges or handovers outside its scope.
If you’re arranging customer deliveries, check the options and prices that apply to your parcel on Moveka’s Send page.
What should you compare in a rail and road quote?
- Cargo and quantity: make sure both quotes cover the same goods, load size and handling requirements.
- Endpoints and scope: check whether the price covers collection, terminal or depot handling, the main journey and delivery to the final address.
- Extra charges: ask for an itemized breakdown of handling, trucking at either end, loading and offloading, storage, waiting, insurance and any applicable surcharges. Confirm which items apply to your specific shipment.
- Tariff dates and validity: check the quote issue date, when its rates take effect, how long the quote is valid and whether charges may change before booking.
- Cutoffs and cargo acceptance: get the relevant terminal cutoff, acceptance requirements and departure or collection schedule in writing. Ask what happens if a cutoff is missed; don’t infer freight deadlines from a facility’s general opening hours.
- Handover and updates: clarify who coordinates each transfer, who follows up if something is delayed and how you’ll receive shipment status updates.
When does rail freight fit?
Rail can be worth comparing when your cargo and endpoints fit the service being quoted. But a depot-to-depot price is not automatically a door-to-door price: collection, terminal handling and the final truck leg may need to be arranged and priced separately. Confirm the cargo type accepted and every leg included before you compare totals.
When does road freight fit?
Road quotes may describe a direct pickup-to-delivery movement, or they may cover only part of the journey. Check the same details either way: endpoints, handling, waiting, storage, applicable surcharges and who owns each handover. Don’t assume that a single quoted amount includes every step.
How can you keep orders moving around Industrial Area, Athi River or Embakasi?
If those are part of your own delivery-planning day, use one simple handover routine: group ready orders, record each parcel’s destination and contact details, assign who prepares it for collection, and share a clear status update with the customer. That helps you avoid arranging every order from scratch while keeping customers informed.
How to choose fairly: a quick quote-check method
- Write down the cargo, quantity, pickup point and final delivery point you want covered.
- Ask each provider to itemize included and excluded services and charges.
- Check the quote’s effective date, validity and written cutoff and acceptance details.
- Compare the full door-to-door cost and handover plan—not just the main transport leg.
- Keep the written quote and agreed responsibilities with your shipment records.
