Get clear on who must release your cargo before you send a vehicle to JKIA—because landed does not mean ready to collect. The key is to confirm customs clearance, terminal handover and any outstanding requirements separately.

Who releases cargo at JKIA? Understand the three roles

Think of collection as separate responsibilities, not one all-in-one approval. Customs handles the customs decision; a clearing agent can manage paperwork and follow-up; and the airline or cargo-handling party coordinates the terminal handover. Your freight forwarder may arrange transport, but that does not automatically mean they are handling customs or confirming the cargo is ready. Ask who owns each step for your shipment.

What should you confirm before sending a vehicle to JKIA?

Use this checklist before dispatch. Get clear answers from the person managing your clearance and the party responsible for the cargo handover.

  1. Who is filing the customs entry, following up with the airline or handling shed, and obtaining any required approvals?
  2. Has customs release been recorded, and are any other required approvals complete?
  3. Is the cargo physically available for handover, and where is the collection point?
  4. Are any charges still outstanding? Request an itemised breakdown, identify who receives each payment, and ask what official invoice or receipt you will get. Check whether any customs taxes or levies, agent fees, or airline or handling charges apply—do not rely on an unexplained total.
  5. What must the driver present, and are there vehicle-access or loading arrangements to follow?
  6. Do the air waybill number, consignee name, package count and cargo description match across the arrival notice and clearance documents? Resolve any mismatch before dispatch.
An arrival notice or release order is a reason to check the next steps—not proof by itself that every clearance and terminal requirement is complete.

A practical JKIA collection example

If your driver is setting out from Embakasi to collect cargo before heading toward Industrial Area or Syokimau, first get the release status, collection point, outstanding requirements and driver instructions in writing. If any shipment detail differs between the arrival notice and your documents, have the responsible agent resolve it before the vehicle leaves.

What can go wrong if you send the vehicle too early?

  • The cargo may have arrived but not yet be ready for handover.
  • You may discover that another party—not the person you contacted—handles a required step.
  • Unclear or unitemised charges can leave you unsure what is due, who should receive payment or what proof to keep.
  • A mismatch in the consignee name, air waybill or package details can hold up collection.

What to do next
