Delivery should fit you, not the other way round. A clear handover plan can help you receive a parcel with mobility or sensory needs, without a smartphone, or where mobile coverage is unreliable.
Start with your parcel details to see the options that apply, then choose what works for you.
Can you receive a parcel without a smartphone?
You may not need an app to prepare for a handover, but don’t assume a particular contact or tracking method is available. Before dispatch, ask which non-app options can be used for your parcel—such as a call, SMS or a tracking reference—and choose one you and the recipient can access. If signal is unreliable, agree on what to do if a message or call does not get through.
How do you make a parcel handover accessible?
Describe the practical adjustment you need: for example, a call on arrival, a step-free entrance, a lift or ramp, or a different agreed handover point. If you cannot reach the door, consider whether an authorised person can receive the parcel. Agree the arrangement before dispatch, and avoid asking a driver to enter your home or leave a parcel somewhere insecure.
What should you tell the courier—and what can you keep private?
Give task-focused instructions, not your medical history. Explain the access or communication adjustment that will help; share a diagnosis only if you choose to and it is genuinely necessary. Include an alternative recipient’s name and number only if that person has agreed to help and the arrangement has been agreed for the parcel.
What is a clear delivery instruction?
Keep it short and specific: “Please call on arrival. I cannot reach the front gate; meet me at the step-free entrance. If I cannot answer, contact [authorised recipient] at [number].” Replace the details with an arrangement agreed for your parcel.
What if you cannot reach the door or lose signal?
Don’t rely on an assumed pickup point, safe-place drop-off, signature method or app-free process. Decide on a suitable fallback with the courier before sending, and make sure it is secure and workable for the person receiving the parcel.
